SynthesAsia approaches sound not as passive background noise, but as a dynamic arena of territorial control, rapid urbanization, and algorithmic sorting. In contemporary China, public space is intensely curated—punctuated by automated public announcements, traffic hums, broadcast music, and localized acoustic surveillance. As a suite of mobile audio applications, SynthesAsia turns traveling through China into an exercise in tactical listening.

By transforming everyday acoustic environments in real time using DSP manipulation, pitch tracking, synthetic layering, spectral visualization, speed-warping, and geofenced playback, the project disrupts the illusion of a static, controlled public soundscape—reclaiming sonic agency for the listener.

The suite operates across two primary axes: Acoustic Restructuring & Frequency Auditing (deconstructing, visualizing, and harmonizing live environmental noise) and Locative & Velocity Kinematics (binding geographical coordinates and travel speed directly to audio playback and signal warping).

I. Acoustic Restructuring & Frequency Auditing: Decoding the City

The first group of applications intervenes directly in the live acoustic environment—rendering hidden frequencies visible and transforming chaotic, industrial, or ambient noise into structured, harmonic systems.

  • Audroner — Acoustic Fragmentation & Reclamation
    • Mechanic: Slices ambient environmental audio into loopable micro-segments, applying DSP effects to turn street noise, transit hums, or PA broadcasts into evolving drones and musical pads for compositions.
    • Disruption: Deconstructs intrusive or industrial acoustic pollution, neutralizing its dominance by repurposing it as harmonious musical texture.
    • Critique: Rapid infrastructure development and urban density produce a constant, oppressive baseline of machine noise and public messaging. Audroner critiques this non-consensual sonic saturation by seizing control of the signal: it strips urban noise of its authority and forces it to serve as the harmonic bed for personal artistic creation.
  • Sonic Weaver — Harmonic Decryption of the City
    • Mechanic: Employs real-time pitch detection algorithms to analyze ambient environmental noise—traffic, chatter, construction machinery—and translates dominant frequencies into melodic notes.
    • Disruption: Uncovers latent musicality inside unpredictable, chaotic urban environments, translating raw cacophony into structured, generative harmony.
    • Critique: Sonic Weaver challenges Eurocentric definitions of noise versus music, directly engaging with the overwhelming acoustic intensity of megacities. By algorithmically extracting “the music of everyday noise,” it comments on how human ears adapt to hyper-dense environments, proving that meaning can be actively decoded from what society discards as mere acoustic trash.
  • SonicCam — Visualizing the Invisible Soundscape
    • Mechanic: Captures photographic images embedded with a real-time, overlaid audio spectrogram of the location’s ambient sound spectrum at the exact moment of exposure.
    • Disruption: Collapses sight and sound into a single evidentiary document, making invisible acoustic pressure, noise pollution, and broadcast frequencies visually explicit.
    • Critique: Public space surveillance focuses primarily on visual monitoring, masking how sound is used to manage and regulate environments. SonicCam audits the sonic landscape, exposing the unseen acoustic footprint of modern urban spaces and turning casual travel photography into a tool for environmental frequency analysis.
II. Locative & Velocity Kinematics: Travel, Acceleration, and Space

The second group links playback and signal processing directly to physical mobility, spatial boundaries, and high-speed transportation networks.

It confronts the artificiality of modern urban green spaces and manicured “smart cities,” asking: when synthetic noise can mask real environments, where does natural space end and curated simulation begin?
  • GeoMusic — Algorithmic Territorialization & Location-Aware Narrative
    • Mechanic: Links user-defined audio files to specific geofences and GPS coordinates, dynamically reordering playlists and triggering soundtracks as the user moves across geographic borders.
    • Disruption: Subverts commercial GPS navigation apps—which view geographic movement purely through logistics and efficiency—by turning physical travel into a location-bound, subjective audio narrative.
    • Critique: Modern mobility is deeply tied to digital identity, tracking, and location services. GeoMusic co-opts geofencing—a technology often associated with boundary control, targeted advertising, and spatial management—to create localized soundscapes. It critiques how digital platforms partition physical land, allowing users to re-map space according to personal memory and artistic intent rather than state or corporate routing.
  • ChronoDrift — Velocity-Bound Time Warping
    • Mechanic: Captures ambient audio samples and dynamically pitch-shifts, time-stretches, or warps their playback parameters based on the traveler’s physical movement speed (e.g., walking vs. high-speed rail).
    • Disruption: Ties temporal playback directly to physical momentum, transforming static environmental recordings into fluid, velocity-dependent musical textures.
    • Critique: High-speed transit networks (bullet trains, highways, rapid transit) collapse geographical distance, dictating the pace of modern life. ChronoDrift reflects the psychological distortion of hyper-speed travel, turning the velocity of transit into an active sound-shaping instrument that comments on accelerationism and the blurring of spatial boundaries.

Collective Resonance: Coding as Sonic Resistance

Together, the six tools within SynthesAsia respond to a zeitgeist shaped by spatial control, smart-city infrastructure, rapid transportation networks, and the constant digital mediation of daily life. While mobile technology often isolates travelers from their surroundings via noise-cancelling headphones, SynthesAsia uses code to actively re-engage with and subvert the environment.

By converting ambient noise into composition tools, pitch matrices, synthetic overlays, frequency visualizers, velocity warps, and spatialized playlists, SynthesAsia asserts that the acoustic sphere is a vital political frontier. It transforms the traveler from a passive consumer of urban space into an active conductor of their own acoustic reality.
