A reference to the seminal 1920s film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, CALIGARI’S CABINET is a growing collection of interactive devices and applications that reflect on the madness and delusions of contemporary society. Reality is imagined and constructed (as in the film), and people are somnambulists controlled hypnotically to do the bidding and obsessions of others. Programming (often deployed for corporate ends) is co-opted and transformed into programs and objects of resistance.
Playing on the word “resistance”; an interactive application that encodes typed text into panels of colour blocks based on resistor codes.
Device/application combo that generates music in realtime based on performance of stock market tickers.
A pole fitted with compass and accelerometer sensors that participants have to hump in specific directions and intensities to be rewarded / activate other devices.
A GPS-tracking device incorporating temperature, humidity, noise, light, and carbon monoxide sensors monitor and visualize the quality of life (via an application) in different parts of the city.
Muscle sensors trigger taped applause when weights are lifted.
Multiple heartbeat sensors generate and trigger ambient projections.
Converse with a device equipped with an alcohol sensor, and Dada speech synthesis.
Endless cycle of illogic; ill logic. Encodes real world “logic” onto electronic circuits to illustrate the arbitrariness of “truths”.
Questions aesthetics of capture and reproduction in the proliferation of imagery; the tyranny of tourism, viewpoints, iconicity and style.
I Can’t Say Ain’t
Exploring the abstraction, mediation, translation and commodification of desire. Distance sensors distort and overlay a fugue of “yes” in different languages tracks onto projections abstracted from pornography. Inspired by a joke that imagined how a pornographic film would play if dubbed in a different language.
Tarot of Ignominy
Physical deck, as well as interactive application, to read one’s destiny; however traditional Tarot imagery has been replaced by logos of corporations and organizations that pervade and impact our food, health, environment, and economy. Inspired from DEALT.
