Died of Spurn

DIED OF SPURN is an anagram of “De Profundis” and transforms Oscar Wilde’s letter into an interactive experience and album of Irish Folk-inflected songs (19 songs utilizing Ballad, Lament, Sean-nós forms, plus 1 bonus track) adapted from the text. Scrolling through and reading “De Profundis”, highlighted text passages appear – clicking on the highlighted text of will play the song derived from the passage. (If the passage was adapted into song lyrics instead of used as is, the lyrics will also display beneath the song playback.)

DIED OF SPURN was originally conceived as a mono-opera (some of the arias can be heard in Lieder Ohne Kunst – Tracks 38 to 41) but the project had stalled over the decades; it is now reconceived in a contemporary interactive installation where the music is not only integral to the text, but also colors its emotional context.

Started by trans-discplinary art-ivist Stephen Chen to consolidate his recent work; as well as facilitate collaboration with others. Stephen’s oeuvre is often allegorical as well as simultaneously deconstruct and hybridize the very forms he works in. Disdaining academic and esoteric expressions, as well as institutional conventions and practices, Stephen explores complex ideas and issues immanent in his works through experiments in form and technique.
